Where relevant, we've given alternate routes in case of construction or accident delays.
| If you know how to get to City Island,
just follow the local directions below -
if not, find the section below that pertains to you and then add on these Local Directions: The City Island Bridge becomes City Island Avenue. Go through all four traffic lights. (At the fourth you'll see the Post Office on the right.) Go four more blocks ahead to Pilot Street, the next 4-way intersection (no light). Turn left on Pilot, and GO SLOW. Turn left at the sign for Consolidated Yachts on the left into a narrow driveway between two buildings, and go very slow. Turn right into the boatyard, and about halfway down toward the water, the yard opens both to the right and left just after a large metal container. Turn right, and you'll see our parking area with lined spaces to your left. Park only in those spaces. Parking can be tricky in boat yards due to the need to move boats and equipment, sometimes on a moment's notice. Also, access for emergency vehicles must be open at all times. If parking appears full when you arrive, simply come to the classroom area and ask an instructor or launch operator where to park. Street parking is safe and fairly abundant, too, both on City Island Avenue and the side streets. Classroom: walk down toward the waterfront and at water's edge is a white building on the right. Walk up the staircase facing the parking lot and down the hall to the classroom. If you're early you can also hang out by the water. There are benches under the classroom building and just beyond. Sun or shade - your call! Take the West Side Highway or Harlem River Drive to the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95). At fork, stay left for I95 North-Bruckner Expressway/New England. Take exit 8B (Orchard Beach/City Island). Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. Alternate: take the very first exit off the Cross Bronx for the Major Deegan South. This loops around to the east after a few miles and becomes the Bruckner Expressway. Take this across the Bronx; after the exit for the Throggs Neck Bridge, the Bruckner curves left and merges with the Cross Bronx. Get off at the second exit after this curve, Orchard Beach/City Island (8B). Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. Alternate (and quite scenic, too):
Skip Cross Bronx exit, stay on Henry Hudson. A few exits after toll
($1.75 cash, less with EZ Pass), take exit for Mosholu Parkway, which turns
into a limited access road with lights. Take Mosholu to the end,
turn right and follow signs for Bronx Zoo/Fordham Road/Botanical Garden.
Take this road to Route 1 (Fordham Road/Pelham Parkway). There are
junction signs on the right shortly before a fork: stay left at fork.
Then, turn left onto Route 1: you'll see a McDonalds ahead and to your
right, and the Bronx Zoo ahead and to the left. (You'll turn just
in front of the Zoo sign.) Pass all exits for Hutch, 95, etc.
Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic
circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there,
follow Local Directions.
Take the FDR Drive to the Triboro Bridge to the Bruckner expressway- Either way: Cross Bronx or Bruckner: take eastbound to merge (New England Thruway); take second exit after merge (Orchard Beach/City Island). Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there follow Local Directions. Fordham Road/Pelham Parkway: take to end, passing Hutch and I95 signs. Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there follow Local Directions. Major Deegan: north or south, as case may be, to Cross Bronx Expressway East. Take to fork and stay left for I95, New England Thruway. Take 2nd exit, Orchard Beach/City Island (#8B). Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there follow Local Directions. Alternate: instead of Cross Bronx, go south on Deegan until it loops around east and becomes the Bruckner. After the Bruckner merges with Cross Bronx/New England Thruway, get off at the second exit (Orchard Beach/City Island). Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. Alternate (and more scenic): instead of Cross Bronx or Bruckner, take Mosholu Parkway South (Bronx Zoo/Bot. Garden/Fordham), which turns into a limited access road with lights. Take Mosholu to the end and turn right. Go a short distance to Route 1 (Fordham Road/Pelham Parkway). There are junction signs on the right shortly before you reach a fork: stay left at fork. Then, turn left onto Route 1. (You'll see a McDonalds ahead and to your right, and the Bronx Zoo ahead and to the left. You'll turn left just in front of the Zoo sign.) Pass all exits for Hutch, 95, etc. Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. Belt Parkway: east to Van Wyck, North. Take to Whitestone Bridge. After crossing, take the Hutchinson River Parkway. Take a few exits to Orchard Beach/City Island. After ramp, you'll come to a roundabout (traffic circle, yes, but I like roundabout, so sue me). Bear right (there's a sign for City Isle). After a straightaway, there's a traffic light before a bridge. Turn left at this light. You'll pass a mini-golf on the left and some water to the right, then come to another roundabout. Go half way around, and continue straight (there's a sign for City Isle). You'll cross the City Island Bridge onto the Island. From there follow Local Directions. 495/Long Island Expressway, or Grand Central: east or west, as appropriate, to one of the following (in east to west order): Van Wyck, Clearview, or Cross Island, all northbound. Van Wyck: to Whitestone Bridge. Take Hutch (see Belt directions above). Alternate to Hutch: after Whitestone, stay right and follow signs for I-95/New England Thruway. Get off at Orchard Beacn/City Island (exit 8B). You'll cross a bridge soon; take your first right at the light, continue straight after a traffic circle, and you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. Follow Local Directions. Clearview or Cross Island: take to Throggs Neck Bridge. Follow signs for New England Thruway; take to Orchard Beach/City Island a few exits away (#8B). Cross a bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. We're easily accessible from almost anywhere in the county. You're probably only 20 to 30 minutes away! Here are directions from the major arteries. The first two options cover Connecticut as well (Hutchinson Parkway simply becomes Merritt Parkway). Merritt/Hutchinson Parkway: Take south to Orchard Beach/City Island exit, which is just after an overpass; slow down there. After ramp, there's a traffic circle - follow the sign for City Island (bear right). After a straightaway, turn left at the first light. At the next traffic circle, go half way around and continue straight. Cross the City Island bridge and follow Local Directions. From I95 (New England Thruway): Take south to Hutchinson Parkway south; follow Hutch Directions above. From Cross County: Take east to Hutch; follow Hutch directions. From Major Deegan Expwy or Sprain Pkwy: South to Cross County; East to Hutch; follow Hutch Directions. From Bronx River Pkwy: South to Cross County; East to Hutch; follow Hutch Directions. From Tappan Zee and/or Cross Westchester: Take east to Hutch or I95; follow directions above. Hint: there's no toll south/west bound on 95. If you want straighter driving with a lit road at night, pay the damn toll and stay on 95 north/east, especially if you're not driving a sports car. End of editorial. From Boston Post Road/Shore Road (Larchmont, New Rochelle): Post Road south to Shore Road (left at Taco Bell); Shore Road south to traffic circle. Follow signs for City Island (essentially straight). After a straightaway, turn left at the first traffic light. At second roundabout, go half way around and continue straight. Cross the City Island bridge and follow Local Directions. Take LIE/495 or Northern/Grand Central Parkway to Cross Island Parkway. Head north to the Throggs Neck Bridge. Follow signs for Bruckner/New England Thruway. Take Exit 8B, Orchard Beach/City Island. Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. Alternate: continue on Cross Island to Whitestone Bridge (or bypass Cross Isle and take Clearview to bridge). After Whitestone, do one of the following: 1. Take Hutchinson Parkway to Orchard Beach/City Island exit. After ramp, there's a traffic circle - follow the sign for City Island (bear right). After a straightaway, turn left at the first light. At the next traffic circle, go half way around and continue straight. Cross the City Island bridge and follow Local Directions. 2. Take 95 North/New England. Get off at Exit 8B, Orchard Beach/City Island. Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. George Washington Bridge to Cross Bronx Expressway. Take east to fork, bear left for I95/New England Thruway. Take 2nd exit, Orchard Beach/City Island (#8B). Cross the bridge and follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. Alternate: cross GW bridge, take Henry Hudson North ($1.75 toll or EZ-Pass). Exit at Mosholu Parkway. Take east to end; turn right at signs for Botanical Garden/ Bronx Zoo/ Fordham. At junction with Route One East, turn left (along Bronx Zoo). This becomes Pelham Parkway. Continue until you cross a bridge; follow signs for City Island. After a traffic circle, you'll cross another bridge onto the Island. From there, follow Local Directions. |

(which is most of the time), we'll be glad to pick you up from the #5 or
#6 trains, the BX12 or 29 bus, Express Bus, or Metro North. Let
us know in advance so we can plan ahead - at least the day before.
Pretty accomodating, eh?
From Grand Central or 125th, take the New Haven line to Pelham (30 minutes from Grand Central & 20 from 125th). Click here or on the logo above for schedules and other info. Total time from Grand Central: 40 minutes including pickup. SUBWAY:
#5 (East side express). Take to Pelham Parkway (Williamsbridge). We'll pick you up; 7' transfer. Around 45 minutes total. #6 (East side local): take to last
stop, Pelham Bay Park. We'll pick you up. Or, transfer
free (Metro Card) to BX29 bus to City Island (very
important as there are 3 routes!) downstairs from train. City Island
is five minutes from there: get off at Pilot Street, most of the
way down the Island (short Island!). It's four traffic lights down
the Island and another four short blocks. Cross the avenue and walk down
Pilot Street. Turn left into Consolidated Yachts between two buildings.
Bathrooms are on your left: staircase between two evergreen bushes.
Turn right and walk down the yard to the waterfront; we're in the white
building. Staircases facing Pilot Street lead up to the top.
Go up, walk down the hall, and you're at our classroom. If you're
early, you can hang out by the water - under or just beyond the building.
There are some benches there.
BUS:
Take #6 or #2 trains, as outlined above. If they're not near you, find closest connecting line first, such as A, N/R, E, etc. Or, take a train to the east side of Manhattan and connect with the Express Bus Service as outlined above. Options, depending on where you're
coming from:
Take BX 12 bus to #6 Train station (elevated, the last stop for the #6 - ask driver if you're not sure). To trasfer to bus via subway (free with Metro Card), take #2 train to Pelham Parkway, or #6 to last stop, Pelham Bay Park. BX 29 stops downstairs. You can call for a ride instead of transferring to the BX29. Metro North/Harlem Line: to Botanical
