"Jim & Steve-
Rand and I just wanted to share our enthusiasm and thanks with both of you... Together, you have made our learning experience, by turns, enjoyable, wondrous, exhilarating, challenging, and unbelievably fulfilling.
Thanks again for everything you have done for us.  Your dedication to sailing is both obvious and invigorating..."

-G.D. Peters and Rand Harper, New York, NY.
Graduates of Start Sailing, Start Cruising & Start Navigating.  G.D. and his buddy Rand plan to sail around the world to fundraise for children's causes and promote general awareness and good will.  Visit their website: 2idiotsinaboat.com

At New York Sailing Center, our program is backed up with the experience and perspective of almost 40 years in the sailing school industry.  But we're constantly doing what made us an award-winning industry leader in the first place: re-thinking and re-inventing the wheel (sorry - that's "tiller!").

It's reflected in the content and format of the courses, particularly in our emphasis on boat handling and safety skills.  You'll see it in our variety of teaching aids, including our signature Obstacle CourseSM on-water training aid - an apparent NY Sailing Center exclusive.

Beginners will experience it with the boat they learn on, the Beneteau First 21.0, which has the best balance of properties of school boats in use today.  The Beneteau 21 has twin rudders, making your learning experience much more effective, and making it easier for you to sail other boats later.  Far from a gimmick, twin rudders are used on the most serious ocean racing yachts - Vendee Globe, Volvo Ocean Race, and Transat 650 (6.5 meters, or 21 feet!), to name a few.

Our location, once seen, speaks for itself.  We have perhaps the finest teaching waters anywhere, with no time wasted getting to them.  New York Sailing Center is located at City Island, where you'll enjoy learning to sail protected from natural and man-made disturbances such as wind shears, strong currents, and commercial shipping traffic.  Try that in NY Harbor and the Rivers!  City Island and New York Sailing Center have been featured in numerous cable and broadcast TV shows due to the nature of the area.  Two Universities from Manhattan - Columbia and Fordham - base their sailing teams at City Island.  What does that tell you about learning to sail here versus Manhattan area waters and New York Harbor?!  (See video clips from these shows, as well as the Fordham sailing team, on our video clips page.)

Manhattanites can hardly believe they're still in New York, yet City Island is very close to Manhattan: less than the length of Manhattan away from it, and commuting is quick and easy - even by public transit.*  Drivers can park free on-site.  You can turn your experience into a real getaway, or simply make it a viable and attactive option to travel from upstate or out-of-state to enjoy all the advantages we offer.

And, it's quick!  Even if it takes you a little longer to get to us, you get that extra time back on the first trip out on the water.  Unlike most other schools, our location is right in productive teaching waters.  You won't waste significant "class" time just getting out to an area where you can learn to sail properly.  Net result?  You'll learn to sail better, and enjoy it more too!  Better training makes for better sailing skills - and those skills follow you wherever you choose to go sailing later.

I want to visit, and need DIRECTIONS
*The #2, 5 & 6 trains and Metro North are all very convenient to us, with a quick transfer from the station (we can pick you up).  Driving is easy from almost anywhere.

We offer a full variety of courses to satisfy everyone from the would-be sailor to the aspiring racer.  Our boats are ideally suited to their tasks, and in contrast to many other area sailing schools, you'll NEVER sail with an instructor who hasn't been certified by either ASA or US Sailing!  All courses leading to certification meet or exceed ASA & US Sailing's standards.

Instructors Wanted: ASA or US Sailing Certification required  (if you're qualified, we can help you get it). Call or e-mail

After you become a newly-certified menace (just kidding), you can keep sailing with rentals, our sailing club, and more advanced courses.

As well as standard certification courses, we also offer the following:

Spinnaker Clinics
These 1-day workshops give you the skills and practice you need to go fly a "kite."  Taught on our Beneteau First 210's, the clinic teaches you:
  • Spinnaker theory
  • Packing the "chute"
  • Spinnaker-specific rigging
  • Setting, jibing, and dousing
  • Avoiding & dealing with broaches

Marine Radar Clinic
(ASA Endorsement Certification)
With radar becoming increasingly common and affordable, this clinic makes a lot of sense. Learn radar basics that apply to all radar units, how to navigate with radar in conjunction with a chart, and how to use Radar for collision avoidance.

GPS Clinic
As the standard for electronic navigation, it's important to learn how to properly use it without over-relying on it.  We include a chart and make sure you can plot latitude/longitude coordinates as well as covering GPS basics and not-so-basics in this clinic.

Private Instruction
Private instruction is a versatile way to brush up on certain skills or even fit an entire course into your own schedule   We can also teach you on your own boat, or on our cruising auxiliaries.

Corporate Programs
(Call to discuss pricing)
Whether you're interested in a corporate team-building exercise, or you just want to reward employees with a fun, healthy outing, we can custom-tailor a package to suit your needs.  Racing is also availalbe on our fleet of Beneteau First 210's.

The names of the courses say it all.  Choose from the links below to explore, or for a full list of courses, clinics and rates, see our Schedules/Sign-up page.
