NEW: The New York Timesdid an on-line piece about the cinematic history of City Island.  This link takes you there; be sure to click the link for the multimedia slide show about 7 of these films shot on the island.  We heard that "Riding in Cars with Boys" with Drew Barrymore had scenes on City Island, and that Nicole Kidman was shooting a film there not long ago.

Doyle Sailmakers  is one of the largest sailmaking companies and also one of the best.  Mark Ploch, owner of the City Island location, also owns a Doyle loft in Florida.  A former J-24 North American champion who now campaigns various offshore one-designs, Mark advises New York Sailing Center YC's racing programs.  Doyle is our sail loft of choice for new sails and repairs.

The American Sailing Association is based in Marina Del Rey, California.  A sailing advocacy organization founded in 1983, ASA was begun to provide nationally recognized, minimum instruction standards for sailing schools.  Over 90% of commercial sailing schools in the country are ASA affiliates.
The United States Sailing Association is based in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.  An Act of Congress gave it the title of National Governing Body of Sailing.  Originally formed in 1897 as the North American Yacht Racing Union, it underwent some name and mission changes over the decades and while still governing sailboat racing in the US, it now offers a national system of instruction and certification standards as well.

New JSI is owned by Mark from Doyle Ploch sails and is a great online source for a wide range of sailing and related supplies.

Beneteau was founded in 1884 and is the oldest and largest manufacturer of sailing yachts in the world - the "Rolls Royce" of builders.  With over 5 million ocean miles under its belt, Beneteau has more open ocean testing than any other builder.
New York Sailing Center & YC has a fleet of six Beneteau First 210's, and industry exclusive.  The First 210 won Cruising World's Boat of the Year Award for best small cruiser.
Ella Vickers, a dear friend, is the founder and owner of Ella Vickers Recycled Sailcloth Collection.  They make bags and accessories out of sailcloth.  The bags are amazing, with styles to fit everone from the girly girl to the man's man.  Most bags are unisex.

We carry some Ella bags ourselves, and our Director owns three himself.  They're functional, stylish, waterproof and durable.  Some are made from scrap material from the construction of sails, with a smooth, new look.  Others are made from actual used sails, and have a more worn-in or "distressed" look.  Check out the whole line at Ella's web site, and if we don't have what you want, get them from her!

City Island's dive shop is a 5-Star PADI Training Facility and a member of the Eastern Dive Boat Association.  As well as training new and experienced divers alike, Captain Mike's performs a variety of commercial services from simple bottom cleaning to untangling ropes and fishing lines from propellers - even raising sunken vessels.
"Imagine 2 friends who don't know anything about sailing suddenly pledging to each other to sail around the world.  They're gonna learn how to sail, get themselves a boat, and circumnavigate the globe. That's these guys."  And those are some of the words from their inspiring web site.
G.D. Peters and Rand Harper, a/k/a (also and affectionately ) 2 Idiots in a Boat, are well under way towards achieving their goal of sailing around the world to fundraise for children's causes and promote good will in general all along their route.  Find out all about it by visiting their web site, and read about their experiences at New York Sailing Center & YC.

Just as it appears, this site is dedicated to everything City Island and is well worth a visit! Explore restaurants, nautical heritage and other things to do in between classes.

"What Is GPS?" is answered here by Garmin, one of the premier manufacturers of GPS (Global Positioning System) equipment and our brand of choice.  A handheld GPS receiver can set you back less than a good VHF radio, and handle most of your navigation work in any weather.  This page describes GPS in general, giving a great little education on the subject.  Of course, when you're done you can check out the rest of their site as well.
The National Weather Service is charged with monitoring atmospheric and surface conditions and issuing forecasts.  These days, you can go directly to their web site for (near) hourly updates on regional wind and wave conditions, forecasts, and actual readings from specific stations such as Ambrose Tower.

New York Nautical on Church Street in Manhattan is the area's oldest and largest distributor of national & worldwide nautical charts, publications, maritime books, instruments, digital charts, and navigation software & electronics.  This is a beautiful store with an antique look about it, boasting a friendly, knowledgeable staff.  It's one stop shopping for any navigation needs, including nautical gifts.  A number of our instructors consider it one big nautical toy store, and we get many of our own supplies here.  Their web site has an on-line store with a secure, encrypted server.
Sunsail is the world's largest charter company with about 40 locations worldwide.  It is quite possibly the finest as well.  In 2000, they introduced the Sunsail Sailing School Network, comprised of quality schools in the United States, where prospective sailors are directed for basic lessons or to advance their skills to the level needed for bareboat chartering.  Network schools and their students benefit from their special relationship with Sunsail.  New York Sailing Center & YC was chosen as the Network's school for New York.

West Marine (with a Manhattan location formerly known as Goldberg's, then E&B), is the nation's largest boating supply chain, with stores all over and of course a web site with e-commerce and live people to talk to and order from.  West has excellent "Advisor" descriptions on different types of products, and their "No Hassle" return policy which is exceptional.
THE LAW FIRM OF
GUGLIOTTA & ASSOCIATES
Gugliotta & Associates is a refreshingly competent and ethical law firm with practical wisdom evident in everything they do.  It's also a family business.  John, pictured to the left, is a sailor and friend of the school (and a bit of a walking testimonial to our program).

All of us eventually need to consult an attorney.  If you find yourself there, give them a call at 914 813 1700, or click the link to the left to go to their web site.  They have offices in New York and California.

Captain Doug Leihbacher  is one of our instructors and runs his own fine Caribbean trips in the winter.  A certified instructor and licensed captain, Doug brings a lot to the table.  While we want everyone to come on our trips, we can't take everyone everywhere.  We unflinchingly recommend Doug's trips in addition to our own.

Kathy Seff, one of our sailing school students, owns Colorful Visions along with her mother Sandy.  They create all manner of glass art creations at their studio in Bayport, Long Island.  Their work will change the way you see light - literally.  Check out beautiful, original gifts and home decor, as well as custom glass art, on their web site and at the studio.
