Here are our two most recent TV appearances.

Watch us on NBC!
LX*TV First Look, "City Island."  (that's a link.)
Host George Oliphant learns about City Island and our sailing program as we teach him some manuevers on the water!

-Director (of the Sailing Center, not the film footage) Steve Card giving 1st Look's host George Oliphant, at the helm, a quick sailing lesson.

Coming soon to cable -
Faces of New York  (YouTube)
-a new reality series featuring five young New York women trying different things, including sailing with us.  Here's a preview!

Freeze-frame of a scene change as the women from Faces of New York learn a lot about sailing in just a little time.

Two Universities from Manhattan, Columbia and Fordham, have sailing teams.  Both are based on City Island.  (And when Columbia's Sailing Club wants to arrange a learn-to-sail or navigation course, guess who they call...) What does THAT tell you about learning to sail here versus Manhattan/NY Harbor/Hudson River?
See for yourself - watch a SHORT YOUTUBE VIDEO  of the Fordham University Rams starting a sailing race at City Island.  Watch boat #4 closely.  They're called over the line early before the start and have to round the end and come back - but face a solid wall of other boats with right of way.  Watch how they handle it and listen to the reaction of the coaches in a chase boat you don't see!  (Turn your volume up as this was shot with an iPhone and needs a boost.)

If a picture says a thousand words, imagine how much you can learn by watching a few minutes of cyber celluloid!

Here are some short videos to help you learn about sailing in general and our sailing school in particular.
We think this is the most effective way for you to get a strong sense of what's involved in going to sailing school, short of visiting us and taking a tour and a free preview sail.

Most schools have brochures, slogans, and marketing claims.  Most DO NOT have videos.  Our in-house videos are candid and unscripted.  When we're on TV, the sailing action is not coreographed in any way and, believe it or not, most of the dialogue is also ad lib.  Even student and instructor commentary is candid response to questions with no scripting.  (One competitor has a professionally produced video that has a "student" making a false claim about that school's program that the school knows is not true and affects a number of other schools, including ours.)

So, cut through the b.s. and let the videos speak for themselves.  Enjoy!

Watch us on NY1 News!

Reporter Jill Scott of NY1 News came over to the Sailing Center to interview some of our students and us, and film us all in action.  This short piece was originally aired as part of Bronx Week and has been repeating ever since.  The entire clip (2 1/2 minutes) is posted on NY1's site and ours..

CW 11 (WPIX) Morning News -
"Public Transportation Getaways"

The CW 11 did a piece on practical public transportation getaways in conjunction with The Nest, a newlywed magazine.  Hop on the #6 train and you're on your way to City Island, where Riann Smith of The Nest recommended an evening at Le Refuge Inn and a few hours on the water with New York Sailing Center.  We're the middle segment, with video clips and still photos.

Left: students jibing around one of our Obstacle CourseSM buoys as seen in the video.  The CW11 site has changed recently and older videos are not available.  We're working on getting a copy of the footage.

OBSTACLE COURSESM
Take a ride around the Obstacle Course, our exclusive training aid that makes sure you don't go to sailing school to just "sail around!"

See a class do a lap around the Course, and perform all four fundamental sailing maneuvers: heading up, bearing away, tacking and jibing.  Then see assorted other clips of students doing their thing on the Obstacle Course.

This is a great video: it shows you what you'd be doing at our facility.  Our Obstacle Course is the most fun and effective way to learn essential sailing skills, and you won't find anything even close at other schools - regardless of what they might call it.

"Suburban Sailors" on
Rosemary, Queen of the Kitchen

We wind up in the strangest places!  See our crew add a pinch of sea salt to some haute cuisine on this very amusing cooking show.  This series features Rosemary Schrager of England, whose culinary school in Yorkshire inspired a cooking series that has now done a transatlantic and produced a whole series in America.

Rosemary takes on a wide range of culinary clods and helps them to prepare fancy multi-course meals for special occasions.  In this episode, Director and "Dockmaster" Steve, Yard Manager Bob, and Instructor Shaun whip up a meal for Steve's girlfriend Heather (and get verbally whipped in the process by Rosemary's Force 10 at Fastnet instructional style).  This episode aired in 2005, but we've just got around to adding it to our site.

Click here to see it; opens with Windows Media Player.

BACK TO BASICS
This video features highlights from an episode of Back to Basics.  The show, which airs on the Fine Living Network, featured one of our students from 2002 (Aylin Bumin) and her experience at our sailing school.  It's a great preview of going to sailing school in general as well as ours specifically.

 3rd DATE
This footage is from the Metro Channel's show, 3rd Date.  As the name implies, couples on their third date are profiled doing some activity plus a nice dinner.  Brian and Sejal appeared in this episode.  They were law school graduates who were friends for years but then decided to try the romantic angle. 3rd Date follows up with each couple to see how their relationship fared, and posts the verdict on their web site.  Brian and Sejal were still going strong as of their follow-up.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS SERIES

Here are three videos from the first full day of our January 2003 trip to the BVI.  This one day really captures so much of the tropical bareboating experience that instead of making one montage, we made three different movies.  After that, you can take a tour of The Bath's, one of the most famous and popular spots in the BVI.

BVI: DEPARTURE
See us clowning around at dockside, then getting down to some serious chart briefing.   Then, departure under power and setting sails one by one.  We finish with our first tack, and and obviously tired Captain Jim Pinno, "Head Bozo" of this trip, taking a breather.  Jim's "Able Bodied Seaman" assistant on this trip (okay, Co-Captain) was Steve Card, director of the Sailing Center.

BVI: PLAYING AT PETER ISLAND
This one show us playing at Little Harbor, Peter Island, our first destination.  This was shortly after the Departure scenes from the video above.  Great footage of us relaxing in the water (literally, as you'll see), dinghying, and snorkeling.  This is what it's all about!

File Size: 3.8 MB
Movie length: around 1 and one-half minutes

BVI: FIRST NIGHT AT ANCHOR
Dusk and dinner.   A very scenic sunset with numerous volcanic Virgin Island peaks, and Peter Island's Little Harbor at dusk.  We discuss dinner, observe jumping fish, and settle down for the actual spread in the cockpit with music.  A proper end to a complete day.

Opens with: Windows Media Player and RealPlayer  (click on either one to download if needed)
File Size: around 3 MB
Movie length: a little over one minute

THE BATHS.
One of the true "must see" spots in the Virgin Islands.  This spot features several groups of huge boulders along the beach at the western end of Virgin Gorda.  Walk through clear shallow pools of water surrounding by cave-like formations.  Snorkel around the perimeter or through the smooth boulders.  Climb on and around the boulders for spectacular panoramas.  Here's a preview...

DEREK'S PRACTICE SAIL

Click on the following link to download a short video filmed by one of our students, Derek M. Davis.  Derek was inspired to shoot this on one of his practice sails with his classmates (who appear in the video).  New York Sailing Center gives students 2 half-day practice sails after they complete their basic course, and Derek captured the essence of his first sail without an instructor quite nicely!

Opens with: QuickTime. (You can download Quicktime here.)  If your Quick Time doesn't pop up to download the video, just cut and paste this URL into your QuickTime's go to/search window (click on File first on the top bar):
